Sidney Altman, a native of South Africa, founded Altmans in 1975 to provide unique and innovative designs in bathing fixtures to the rich and famous of Beverly Hills. In 1987 he sold his Beverly Hills showroom to concentrate on design and manufacturing. After Altmans' death in 1996, the company passed through a number of owners, including Grupo Industrial Saltillo (GIS), a Mexican company that at the time owned St. Thomas Creations. Evidently, the idea was to round out the St. Thomas upscale bath wares line by adding designer faucets and showers.

It did not work out. In 2004 GIS sold Altmans to Helvex, S.A. Dd C.V., one of the largest manufacturers of faucets and bath wares in Mexico. GIS was in turn acquired by Villeroy & Boch, the German ceramics maker that has been in business since 1746.

Altmans was formerly known for its fanciful faucets shaped like winged swans, leaping dolphins, and crouching dragons, and these faucets were still being manufactured as late as 2004.

Later Altmans collections were stylish but more mundane. They were well designed and well made but not particularly unique, reflecting design themes common to most luxury faucet companies. Altmans also offered a builder's line, which is somewhat less stylish, intended for apartments, motels and institutional living; but also for homebuilders who want the Altmans name in their bathrooms but not Altmans' showroom prices.

These were definitely upscale faucets, manufactured to high standards. But they were unable to capture a strong market outside of Southern California and in 2017 Helvex, in financial trouble in its own country, cut its losses and closed Altmans.

There have been no indications of any plans to revive either the company or the brand.
